It is a philosophy and approach that emphasizes making incremental and continuous improvements in processes, products, and services within an organization. Kaizen originated in Japan after World War II and became popular in various industries worldwide, especially in the context of Total Quality Management (TQM) and Lean Manufacturing.

1. Small Incremental Changes: Kaizen focuses on making small, gradual, and sustainable improvements rather than large, disruptive changes. These incremental improvements add up over time, leading to significant enhancements in efficiency and quality.

2. Employee Involvement: Kaizen encourages employees at all levels of the organization to participate in the improvement process actively. Since they are closest to the processes, their input is valuable for identifying issues and generating improvement ideas.

3. Continuous Process: Kaizen is an ongoing, never-ending process. It becomes part of the organization's culture and requires a long-term commitment to continuously seek ways to improve.

4. Data-Driven Decision Making: Kaizen relies on data and objective analysis to identify areas for improvement and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented changes.

5. Elimination of Waste: Kaizen emphasizes the identification and elimination of various types of waste, including overproduction, waiting time, excess inventory, unnecessary motion, defects, and unused employee creativity (referred to as the 8 forms of waste in Lean Manufacturing).

7. Gemba (The Real Place): Kaizen encourages going to the "gemba," the place where work happens, to observe processes, gather data, and understand issues first-hand.

9. Kaizen Events: Organizations often conduct specific focused events known as Kaizen events or Kaizen blitzes to address specific process improvement opportunities within a short time frame.
